Putting things in perspective. Students at Central Community High School (CCHS) wear special goggles Thursday morning while attempting to pick up poker chips off the ground. The goggles gave students an idea of what it’s like to have alcohol in their systems and the effect it has on their vision, balance and reflexes. Students also tried to drive golf carts through a course in the school parking lot without hitting any cones while texting messages on their phones. The purpose of the event called “Celebrate My Drive” sponsored by State Farm Insurance is to teach students the dangers of distracted driving. Because of the commitment CCHS is making to safe driving, the school is eligible to win a $25,000 or $100,000 grant. Everyone 14 and older is encouraged to go to to vote for the Sabers. Residents may cast their votes once a day, every day now through Friday, Oct. 24. Calamus-Wheatland High School also is among the participating schools. Photo by Kate Howes
