Record-setting pork. Alexis Delaney of DeWitt presents Frankie, the reserve grand champion FFA market hog, in the 2014 Sale of Champions at the Iowa State Fair on Saturday, Aug. 16. The 284-pound crossbred hog sold to Iowa Select Farms for $50,000, a new record price for any animal in the sale and nearly double the 2008 record of $26,000. Delaney said “it was pretty cool” to set the record but she shed “lots of tears” to leave the blue-eyed barrow she’s raised since spring as a member of Central DeWitt FFA. She and Frankie even do a trick to feed him marshmallows, his favorite treat. The sale by the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement set five records, raising $326,900 for the 16 exhibitors of 4-H and FFA grand and reserve champions. Delaney will receive 75-80 percent of the animal’s sale price, which she plans to use for college expenses at Iowa State University, while the foundation uses the rest for its scholarship program and sale expenses.
