Low bid wins electrical job on jail project

By Tom Pantera

CLINTON - Electrical work will begin soon on Clinton County's new law enforcement center, but the winning bid came in so low that bid opening for another contract had to be delayed.

County Building Maintenance Manager Corey Johnson told the county Board of Supervisors Monday the low bid came in at $1.538 million from Rock River Electric of Colona, Illinois.

That compared to bids of $2.19 million from Burke Electric of Clinton and $2.89 million from Tri-City Electric of Davenport.

Those bids were opened Aug. 15. Johnson said officials had hoped to also open bids for the building's elevators that same day, but because of the cost difference among the bids, they spent extra time making sure Rock River Electric had included everything necessary in its estimate.

Supervisors approved the contract, enabling Rock River Electric to start its shop drawings, which will take about a week or 10 days, and then begin the work, Johnson said.

The low bid was about $330,000 less than the project estimate.

Supervisors will probably consider the elevator contract next week, Johnson said.
