McAleer resigns as business manager for Central schools

The business manager/board secretary for the Central Community School District for the last three years is resigning to take a position with the Clinton Community School District.
The Central Community School Board at a special meeting Jan. 30 accepted the resignation of Cindy McAleer, effective March 8.
McAleer will be taking over as chief financial officer for Clinton Community Schools following the retirement of Jan Culbertson, a former Central employee.
Culbertson worked as business manager for Central schools for 13 years, leaving in 2010. McAleer worked as business manager in the Northeast School District for 12 years prior to coming to Central.
Central school board members accepted McAleer's resignation "with regret" and thanked her for her service to the district.
"Cindy definitely will be missed by our school district. She has made a great difference in a few years," said board president Christy Kunz.
Superintendent Dan Peterson said McAleer helped Central's administrative office eliminate a number of outdated practices during her thee-year tenure.
"I hate to see her go. She has been just a joy to work with," Peterson said.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here at Central schools and the direction the district has gone in the past three years. The staff, administration and board of education have all been great to work with. The Central community has so much to be proud of," McAleer stated in her resignation letter.
Board member Kurt Rickard referenced the potential domino effect of personnel changes that could result from McAleer's departure and Culbertson's retirement when he half-jokingly asked McAleer who took over her former position at Northeast.
Peterson commented he has been contacted by Northeast superintendent Jim Cox about Central's timeline for filling the business manager position.
Central is planning for a quick turn-around, with a Feb. 8 application deadline and candidate interviews scheduled for Friday, Feb. 15.
"It is a quick turn around, but it has to be to keep moving forward on this," Peterson said.
Interviews will be conducted by a panel that includes middle/intermediate school principal Jim Wichman, board president Kunz and administrative office staff. Other building principals were invited to participate but are unavailable, Peterson said.
The position is being advertised locally and over the Internet at several school employment websites.
The board discussed placing additional advertising in the Quad Cities but did not direct the superintendent to follow through. Notification of the opening also will be sent to a regional AEA group.
Peterson said the district will back up its hiring timeline if current advertising doesn't draw enough qualified applicants.
Although McAleer's last official day of employment will be March 8, she will serve as board secretary for a March 13 school board meeting.
Central's new business manager and board secretary would start Monday, March 18.
The job posting states the position requires experience with Iowa school finance and state and federal government reporting, school business manager certification from the state or the ability to receive certification and experience with employee supervision. The salary will be in the $60,000-$70,000 range.

McAleer said the budget preparation process will be complete before she leaves for her new position, and she will assist with transitional training as needed.
The school board will get a general overview of Peterson's recommendations for budget cuts at its regular monthly meeting Feb. 12 and will examine the proposals in-depth at a special meeting Feb. 27.
"We've done a lot of work on this. We're not to $800,000 yet, but we'll be coming with a proposal," Peterson said.
