Space still available for 2nd annual 'Daddy-Daughter Date Night' Feb. 25

By Kate Howes
Staff writer

Spots still are open for the second-annual DeWitt parks and recreation "Daddy-Daughter Date Night" Monday, Feb. 25, at the community center.

A buffet dinner by Hall of Fame Pizza & Wings will be served starting at 5:30 p.m., complete with salad, pizza, wings and dessert pizza.

A family movie will be shown at the Operahouse Theatre in downtown DeWitt at 7 p.m. A small pop and small popcorn will be provided to each person.

Youngsters must be at least 5 years old.

Anyone wanting to participate may contact the parks and recreation department by calling 563-659-5127 or download a registration form at and drop it off at the DeWitt Fitness Center, located at 900 14th St.

At their meeting Monday night, members of the parks and recreation commission discussed this year's "Get Fit DeWitt" competition, which now is underway with 44 teams and 264 total participants.

"Those numbers are up from last year," parks and recreation director Kevin Lake notes.

Lake adds 46 Get Fit DeWitt competitors have taken advantage of the fitness center's 68 days for $68 deal.

Gently-used sports equipment sale scheduled April 20

The used sports equipment sale the parks and recreation commission has been planning over the past several months will take place during the spring city-wide garage sale Saturday, April 20, 8-11 a.m. at the community center.

Lake says the commission is seeking gently-used sporting goods appropriate for youth sports programs.

Examples of things they are looking for include old cleats, gloves, balls, parks and recreation reversible jerseys, bats, etc.

"We will gladly accept donations and hopefully sell it to young athletes who can use them," Lake relates. "We don't want treadmills or any large items. All we want is athletic equipment or apparel for kids so their families won't have to pay for something they only will use for one season." Any items not sold will be donated to the DeWitt Referral Center in an effort to keep the equipment in the community.

Collection dates are April 17-18, 5-6:30 p.m. at the community center.

Aquatic center structure selection process underway

The process of selecting a new structure for the zero-depth entry area of the aquatic center is underway.

Lake says construction officially will begin after the pool closes Labor Day weekend.

There are three drawings the commission will look at next month. Designs will include a pirate ship, a whale/fish or a tiki hut.

"I think whatever structure we decide on the kids will really enjoy it," Lake says. "We intend to start on demolition of the current castle and installation of the new island structure just as soon as we close for the 2013 swim season."
