The Observer welcomes Linda Watson as news editor
The management of The Observer is pleased to announce the appointment of Linda Watson as news editor.

She succeeds Mary Rueter as managing editor. Although Rueter is retiring from many of her writing and news-gathering activities, she will continue in a managerial role on a part-time basis.

Watson, a 31-year resident of DeWitt, comes to The Observer with a wealth of newspaper experience, most of it at the Quad-City Times.

She is a native of Ames, where she graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in journalism and mass communication.

Her first professional experience was gained at community newspapers, much like The Observer, in Guthrie Center and Osceola before she joined the Times as its Clinton bureau reporter.

Under her reporting and editing guidance, the Times established its Gateway edition covering Clinton, Jackson and Whiteside counties.

Watson then was promoted to a series of editing positions in the Times' Davenport office involving regional, state and metro news. In addition to daily news, she also edited special features and sections such as On the River, Hometowns and Ask the Times.

"My heart has always been in community journalism from my days at Iowa State. I look forward to meeting people, learning more and giving back to my hometown of DeWitt," she said.

She is married to Bert, a lawyer and judicial magistrate in Clinton. Their daughter, Sarah, is a freshman at Central.

"We are confident Linda will carry on the Observer's strong tradition of producing a newspaper residents of Clinton County can turn to for all their local news," Rueter said.
