Ambrose H. Roling, 90, of DeWitt, formerly of Charlotte, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, at Genesis Medical Center-DeWitt's Westwing Place.

Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, Nov. 3 , at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Sugar Creek, with the Rev. Scott Lemaster presiding.

Burial will take place in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation was Friday, Nov. 2 , 3-7 p.m., at the church, with a rosary at 5:30 p.m. There will be an additional visitation one hour prior to the funeral service.

Lemke Funeral Homes is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Ambrose was born Dec. 26, 1921, in Sugar Creek, just north of Charlotte, the son of Herman and Agnes Sappe Roling. Ambrose was united in marriage to Dorothy Reuter Jan. 4, 1944 in Sugar Creek.

Ambrose owned and operated Ambrose Construction for nearly 40 years, building homes and out buildings. He was a highly skilled carpenter and took great pride in his work.

Following retirement, Ambrose loved to build small barns, doll houses and wooden toys for children. He also found time to repair old furniture and build an occasional out building. Ambrose was always there to lend a hand to the younger carpenters just starting out in the trade and would offer guidance and his expertise with a difficult project they had.

He enjoyed traveling, especially taking bus trips with his wife. He volunteered at St. Joseph's most of his life and also at the nursing home. He also would sneak in a game of cards when he could with his many friends. Above all, he loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ambrose is survived by his children, Gerald (Diane) of LeClaire, Larry of Clinton, Loran (Cheryl) of Delmar, Valerie (Eldon) Schmidt of Bellevue, Rita (Allen) Lange of Knoxville, Bryan of Florida and Tammy Valliere of Tioga, N.D.; 23 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a son, Arnold; three sisters, five brothers, a granddaughter, Jolene Schmidt; and a grandson, Michael Roling.

Memorials may be made to the family.
