Walter Carlyle Starr
Walter Carlyle Starr, 92, of DeWitt died Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, at Mercy Living Center South in Clinton.

A celebration of Walter's life will be held at 2:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 21, at the Carson Celebration of Life Center, Maquoketa. Visitation will be held prior to the service, 12:30-2:30 p.m., at the Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa.

Burial will be at the Union Cemetery, rural Maquoketa.

Walter Starr was born Aug. 1, 1920, in Maquoketa to Joseph Walter and Nellie Kitts Starr. He attended school in Andrew and then served his country as a Navy veteran in the military where he earned his GED. He married Ida Evinger May 3, 1969, in Muscatine.

Upon receiving his honorable discharge, he returned to the Maquoketa area where he worked for Clinton Engines in Maquoketa for over 15 years. He then worked as an electrician for IBEW Local No. 145 in Rock Island, Ill., retiring in 1982.

Walter was a member of the Maquoketa VFW Post No. 3633 O'Connor-Regenwether and the Maquoketa American Legion Post No. 75, where he had served as past commander.

Walter enjoyed gardening, reading the Bible and caring for his collie dogs.

Survivors include his wife; children, Nancy (Donald) Flagel of Maquoketa, Susie (Jim) McCubbin of Fort Dodge, Steve (Cindy) Starr of Maquoketa and Sherri (Dwain) Feller of Spragueville; a step-daughter, Betty Jo Clark of Ft. Worth, Texas; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a step-son, three brothers and four sisters.
