Marian W. Berner

Marian W. Berner, 93, of rural DeWitt died Thursday, April 25, 2013, at The Alverno in Clinton.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 29, at St. John Lutheran Church, Bliedorn. Vicar Michelle Kanzaki will officiate.

Burial will be in Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Kevin Berner, Kenny Berner Jr., Michael Witte, Dean Pingel, Douglas Berner and Dusty Berner; and great-grandsons, Jeffrey Witte, Matt Smith, Brent Smith, Jeremy Anderson, Joe Anderson, Jason Anderson, Steven Pingel and Michael Davis.

Visitation is 2-6 p.m. Sunday, April 28, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt.

The former Marian Wilma Banthin was born April 23, 1920, in Hamburg, Germany, to Johanas and Catherine Diercks Banthin. She and her mother emigrated to the United States when she was a young girl. Her mother married Alvin Hardersen, and together they raised her.

Marian married Kenneth Carl Berner June 21, 1939, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clinton. They farmed and raised their family in the Calamus and Grand Mound, area and moved to rural DeWitt in 1979. Kenneth died June 11, 2012.

Marian was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Bliedorn, for many years.

She was an adventurous lady, who drove tractor on the farm and learned to water ski at 56 years old.

Marian's hobbies included bowling, boating, crocheting, camping, cards and bocce ball.

Survivors include children, Joyce (Don) Simmons of rural DeWitt, Judy Witte of Davenport and Donald (Marty) Berner of Mount Vernon; 20 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Marian also was preceded in death by a son and daughter-in-law, a grandson and a brother.

Memorials may be made to St. John Church.
