John Henry Sievers Jr.
John Henry Sievers Jr., 72, of Calamus died Tuesday evening, Aug. 13, 2013, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

Visitation was 3-7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 16, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt.

A service of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound, with the Rev. Steven Anderson officiating.

Burial will follow at Kvindherred Cemetery, rural Calamus. Pallbearers will be Robert, Anthony and Grant Sievers, John Diercks, Austin Sievers and Jack and Jason Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Jaelyn, Jenna and Janna Diercks and Tyanna Gruenwald.

John was born June 4, 1941, to John "Jack" and Marie Hicks Sievers in Wheatland. He was a graduate of Lost Nation High School.

John was united in marriage to Gwenda Davisson Dec, 30, 1961, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, rural Calamus. The couple farmed together south of Grand Mound until moving to Calamus in 1978.

He worked at Ralston Purina for a time, and later at Iowa Mutual Insurance Co., before taking a position at Central Community Schools-Ekstrand Elementary as a custodian, from which he retired in 2006.

John was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound.

He was proud to be a member of NRA, Pheasants Forever and Whitetails Unlimited. He loved spending time with his family and friends, fishing and hunting deer, turkey and coyote.

John always was sure to be at his grandkids' sporting events. He enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs and harassing Cardinals fans. John loved his time spent at the family farm.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 wonderful years, Gwenda; children, Mark (Vicki) Sievers of Grand Mound, Debbie (Tom) Diercks of Grand Mound and Barry (Deb) Sievers of Bettendorf; grandchildren, Robert (Amanda Knight), Anthony and Grant Sievers, John, Jaelyn, Jenna and Janna Diercks and Austin Sievers; great-grandchild, Alexandria Sievers; step-grandchildren, John (Amy) Wietting, Amanda (Ken) DeWulf and Becky Crotty; step-great-grandchildren, Alyssa Johnson, Ryan and Emma Clark and Austin and Logan Wietting; step-great-great-grand-children, Kaiya and Zaydin; a sister, Judy Smith of Walcott; nieces, nephews and cousins.

John was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Ashley McCandless.
