Preston's hot start spells trouble for Cal-Wheat girls

By Ross Eberhart
Sports editor

An early hole only got deeper for the Calamus-Wheatland girls basketball team during its first game of the new year against Preston.

The hosting Trojans held the Warriors scoreless for the first five minutes of Friday's game and opened up a 16-4 lead as the first quarter came to a close.

Preston's lead continued to grow from there and the Warriors ended up falling 60-20.

Cal-Wheat was limited to just seven points during the first half. Jaelyn Diercks, Becca VanderHeiden and Stephanie Petersen all had hoops in the first two quarters with VanderHeiden adding a free throw for the Warriors.

Unfortunately for the visitors, the second half opened much like the first, as Cal-Wheat was held scoreless for most of the third quarter before a seven-point explosion got the Warriors on the scoreboard.

Cal-Wheat tacked on six more points in the final period of action, but it was not enough to tip the Trojans, who earned the big win.

Nearly all of the Warriors' offense in the second half came from the same person, junior McKenna Luepker, who nailed five shots and tallied 10 points to lead the team.

Tessa Kauffman added a hoop of her own with Petersen chipping a free throw for the Warriors.

Petersen grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds as well, with Abbie Moellenbeck coming up with five and Bailey Moellenbeck four.

Kauffman dished out three assists in the game, while six different Warriors - Megan Slattery, Diercks, VanderHeiden, Luepker, Petersen and A. Moellenbeck - came up with steals. B. Moellenbeck, meanwhile, blocked a pair of Preston shots.
