Moving on. They might have been making their debut, but the Central wrestling team’s quartet of state qualifiers competed like veterans during Thursday’s night’s 2A first round at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Leading the way for the Sabers were senior 152-pounder Greyson Doolittle (above) and junior 195-pounder Jake Feldpausch, who won their openers to advance to the quarterfinals. Doolittle dominated his match with 10th-ranked Zach Moss of Winterset, building up a 5-0 lead on a pair of takedowns and an escape. Moss attempted a comeback in the third period and closed within 7-5, but Doolittle finished off the match with a reversal and two near fall points to post an 11-5 win. Doolittle will meet Perry’s Jackson VanKirk in the quarterfinals. Feldpausch also built up an early lead in his first round match with Independence’s Matt McMillan as the junior notched a pair of takedowns in the first period and added a three-point near fall in the second period to go up 7-2. Feldpausch added an escape to start the third period, but McMillan was able to hit a throw for five points to pull within one. McMillan let Feldpausch escape, but was unable to notch the tying takedown in a 9-7 win for the Saber, who will take on Charles City’s Luke Johnson in the quarterfinals. Earning his own win in the consolation first round was 126-pounder Walker Wegener. The sophomore hung right with fourth-ranked Kyle White of Central Springs in their first round match before falling by a 7-3 decision. Wegener, though, bounced back in his consolation match with Waukon’s Adam Benzing, putting the Indian on his back twice. The second occurrence resulted in a fall in 3:29 for Wegener, who will wait for his next opponent. The night ended on sour note for the Sabers as senior 220-pounder Cameron Donovan wrapped up his career in heartbreaking fashion against ninth-ranked Dylan Nelson of ADM (Adel). The two wrestlers traded escapes in the second and third periods to send the match to overtime, tied at 1-1. The first overtime went by without a winner, so the two went to a second overtime. In the first of two 30-second periods, Nelson escaped to go up 2-1. Donovan had a chance to knot things up with his own escape in the latter period, but Nelson was able to keep the senior down for the 2-1 win. Donovan just ran out of time in his first round match with eighth-ranked Tyler Nguyen of Sergeant Bluff-Luton. Nguyen broke a 2-2 tie with a penalty point, an escape and a takedown in the third period, but Donovan notched a reversal with six seconds remaining and was prying on a power half as time ran out on the 6-4 Nguyen win.
