By Ross Eberhart

Distance was no problem for the Calamus-Wheatland girls track team during its outdoor opener at the West Liberty Invitational.

The Warriors finished 13th as a team with the majority of their 20.33 points at the meet coming in events 800 meters or longer.

Clear Creek-Amana brought home the team title at the event with 145 points, while West Branch was second with 92 and Anamosa third with 84.5.

Cal-Wheat's top finish came in the 3,000-meter run, as sophomore Megan Slattery took fourth in the event with a clocking of 13:05.16.

Right behind Slattery in the race was her sophomore teammate Kailey Potter, who was fifth in the event with a clocking of 13:37.70.

Adding two fifths of her own was freshman Nina Cray, who made a successful outdoor debut in the middle distance events.

Cray picked up one fifth with a time of 1:10.32 in the 400-meter dash and earned the other by clocking in at 2:41.42 in the 800-meter run.

Slattery earned a sixth-place finish in the meet's other long distance event, as she finished the 1,500-meter run with a time of 6:03.80.

The Warriors' final points at the meet came from junior Stephanie Petersen, who was one of three competitors to tie for eighth in the high jump with a clearance of 4-4.
