Allie Anderson Saber shoots medalist round of 47
Saber girls golf team opens season with triangular win

By Ross Eberhart

A jump right into competition did not hinder the Central girls golf team.

Playing in a season-opening triangular meet with Anamosa and host Solon (which also coupled as just their second time playing outside), the Sabers took home team honors with a 212.

Anamosa was just three strokes behind with the Spartans rounding things out with a 222.

"I know the girls really want to start the season out playing at peak performance, but I keep stressing that we are working for the end of the season," Central head coach Troy Steffens said. "Plus, everyone else is in the same position we are, having not been outside."

The Sabers may not have been at their peak, but the 212 they shot was still 14 strokes better than their season-opening score last season against Clinton.

Central was led by its three returnees - senior Krista Duffy and juniors Allie Anderson and Lexi Delaney.

No golfer at the meet had a better score than Anderson, who earned medalist honors with a 47.

Not too far behind Anderson was Duffy, who shot a 51, while Delaney was a stroke back of Duffy with a 52.

The meet also proved to be the varsity debut for a trio of newcomers, who impressed in their first action of the season.

Providing Central's fourth score at the meet was sophomore Mackenzie Kuehn, who carded a 62.

Just two strokes behind Kuehn was junior Delaney Brainerd, while sophomore Maddie Blandin wrapped up Central's scoring with a 70.

"I thought the returning (golfers) played as well as expected and the new girls played better than expected," Steffens said. "I wasn't exactly sure how the new girls would shoot, but I am really pleased and believe that by the end of the season they could all be consistent contributors in scoring."
