Rebels start fast, but cannot keep up with Maquoketa

It did not take long for the Northeast boys soccer team to get visiting Maquoketa's attention during Monday's meeting between the two teams.

The Rebels went on the attack right away and the aggressiveness paid off on the scoreboard.

Unfortunately, once the Cardinals' attention was piqued, things became tougher for Northeast as Maquoketa erased the Rebels' early lead and built up its own in a 6-1 victory.

The Rebels pushed forward in the game's opening minutes and it paid off in the form of a Connor Soenksen goal.

Northeast worked the ball down the sideline when Travis Barten sent a cross into the middle of the field.

The Maquoketa goalkeeper made a move for the ball, but it bounced past a group of players from both teams and right to a waiting Soenksen, who kicked the ball into the open net for his fourth goal of the year.

The Cardinals made sure the lead did not last long as they turned up their own attack and the result was a tying goal.

Maquoketa added another goal shortly thereafter and now it was the Cardinals in front.

The Rebels nearly had their own equalizer as Northeast poked in a loose ball in front of the Maquoketa goal.

A linesman, though, lifted his flag indicating an offside violation and the goal was disallowed.

The call loomed even larger moments later as Maquoketa scored again to make it 3-1.

The Cardinals would add three more goals in the game to bring home a 6-1 victory.

Northeast had three shots in the game with Soenksen turning his attempt into a goal. Barten assisted and has his own shot on goal, while Matt Lorenzen also had a shot for the Rebels, who received 18 saves from goalkeeper Ethan Krogman.
