Saber boys earn district berth with runner-up finish

After last year's disappointing close call, it was going to take more than a little rain to stop the Central boys golf team during last week's 3A sectional meet hosted by Solon.

Playing in off-and-on rain showers, the Sabers earned the second of two spots in yesterday's district meet with a 318.

The score was three strokes short of Williamsburg's winning tally and two strokes better than the score Central posted at last year's meet on the same course.

The Sabers tied for second in that competition, but missed out on a spot at districts due to a tiebreaker.

There was decidedly less drama in Thursday's meet as Central used a runner-up medalist round of 75 from senior Brice Bowen and four other scores in the 80s to take second by six strokes over Washington.

Bowen continued his late-season tear by finishing just three over par despite the wet conditions.

The senior used a birdie on the fourth hole and five pars to card a 38 on the front nine, and Bowen was even better after the turn, parring six holes and collecting another birdie on number 17 to post a 37 and a 75 overall.

Tying for eighth in the meet with an 80 was fellow senior Allen Mumm.

Mumm had a team-high three birdies during his round, including two on the front nine (on the first and six holes). The senior added six pars as well while shooting matching 40s on the front and back nines.

A stroke back of Mumm was junior Grant Henning, who, like Bowen, broke 40 on the back nine.

Henning ended up shooting a 39 on the course's final nine holes with a birdie on 15 and four pars. Henning birdied the fifth hole as well and added a 42 for the 81.

Finishing off the Sabers' team score were senior Mitch Scott and junior Trevor Green, who had matching 82s.

Both golfers had eight pars during their round with the latter also recording a birdie on hole 16.

The Sabers' final score came from sophomore Zach Eden, who had three pars in his round of (46-47) 93.
