Sabers bounce back with two wins over Vinton-Shellsburg

By Ross Eberhart
Sports editor

It did not take long for the Central softball team to rebound from a tough night on the diamond against Solon.

A night after falling twice to the second-ranked Spartans, the Sabers got back to their winning ways with a doubleheader sweep of Vinton-Shellsburg.

Central took out its frustrations with its bats as the hosts piled up 25 hits in the two victories.

The Sabers had 13 hits in a 5-1 victory in the opener and then added 12 more in an 8-6 win that gave them the sweep.

All five of Central's runs in the opener came in the third inning as Katie Irwin, Kalyn Bowen, Miranda Meland, Jessica Machovec and Callaway Kinney all crossed the plate during the frame.

Bowen knocked in a pair of runs during the inning as well with Abby Johnson, Stephanie Schrader and Haley Seitz also driving in a teammate.

That was all the support that senior Brooke Posey needed as the hurler spread out six Vikette hits and allowed just a single run in the fifth, while striking out 10 batters and walking two.

Bowen finished the game with three hits - including a double - while Irwin, Posey and Johnson each added two hits (Johnson hit a double as well).

The Sabers got off to a strong start in game two with three runs right away in the first inning.

The lead only continued to grow too as Central tacked on another run in the third and two more in the fourth to make it 6-0.

Things got interesting, though, late as the Vikettes scored the game's next three runs and then struck for three more in the top of the eighth.

Two big insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, however, created the final margin in an 8-6 Central victory.

Posey and Bowen both had three hits in the game with the latter finishing off her big night with three RBIs and a run.

Morgan Oldsen and Irwin both added two hits and two runs for the Sabers, while Johnson joined Posey with two RBIs. Irwin also drove in a run with Schrader, Seitz and Saunders scoring runs in the game.

Posey earned a second win on the mound, allowing six hits and striking out seven with two walks.

The Sabers were unable to slow down the top-ranked Spartans a day earlier as Solon - who leads the entire state in runs scored - earned a sweep with victories of 16-0 and 10-3.

A 10-run fourth inning carried the Spartans in the opener, but things were much tighter in the nightcap.

It was the Sabers who struck first, plating all three of their runs in the second inning.

Oldsen had the big hit in the frame as her second double of the night drove in two of the runs.

The Spartans answered back with three runs of their own in the third inning and then took the lead with individual runs in the fourth and fifth, but Central was still in striking distance until Solon finished things off with five runs in the seventh.
