Over 20 Observer-area baseball and softball players named All-Big East

With its final two sports seasons in the book, the Big East recently announced its all-conference baseball and softball honorees for 2013.

The Observer-area is once again well-represented on the two honor squads, led by the Northeast baseball team, which had eight players earn All-Big East.

That includes four first-team selections in seniors Ben Hildebrandt and Jared Henfrey, junior Charlie Marcucci and sophomore Michael Hartung.

Joining the quartet of Rebels are a pair of Cal-Wheat seniors - first baseman Justin Alden and shortstop Christian Hansen.

The Warriors added a conference-best four players on the second team with seniors John Diercks and Nolan Christensen, junior Zach Poell and freshman Nick Houzenga all earning nods.

Northeast had three players of its own earn second team in senior Cole Dickey, junior Tevin Stoecker and sophomore Nick Wall.

Rebel freshman Ketzalli Dondiego and Warrior senior Austin Houzenga were both honorable mention selections on the team.

The final area baseball honoree was Northeast first-year head coach Tyler Howe, who joined Lisbon's Ryan Stensland as Co-Coach of the Year.

The area's group of softball selections is led by Northeast freshman Aleenah Marcucci, who landed on the first team and also earned conference MVP honors.

Joining Marcucci as first-team selections were her Rebel teammates Brittany Stoll and Addie Oberman.

The Calamus-Wheatland softball team had three players - senior Abby Pewe, junior Jalen Snowbarger and freshman Jaelyn Diercks - earn a spot on the second team where they are joined by Rebel senior Maddison Daniels.

Northeast sophomore Baylie Parson and Cal-Wheat freshman Bailey Moellenbeck rounded out the area's softball honorees by earning honorable mention accolades.
