Oberman and Brainerd earn INA all-state honors
With the girls basketball season coming to a close this past weekend, the postseason honors have began to roll in for a pair of Observer-area players.

Northeast senior Addie Oberman and Central sophomore Amanda Brainerd both were announced, Tuesday, as members of the Iowa Newspaper Association (INA) all-state girls basketball team.

Oberman, who earned inclusion for a second-straight year, was a third-team selection on the class 3A team, while Brainerd was a third-team pick to the 4A squad.

It was one of three all-state honors for Oberman, who was a second-team selection on separate honor teams released by the Des Moines Register and the Iowa Sports Spotlight.

The Rebel forward finished ninth in 3A in scoring with an average of 17.9 points per game, while also being among the class' leaders in assists (102, good for 14th), steals (81, good for seventh) and rebounds (169, good for 38th).

MOC-Floyd Valley senior Alexis Conaway, who was selected as Iowa's Miss Basketball, led the INA first team in class 3A.

She is joined by a trio of WaMaC players - Center Point-Urbana's duo of Arika Wooldridge and Kennedy Salow and Williamsburg's Paige Greiner - on the first team, which also includes Miranda Murphy of North Polk, Andrea Larson of Mediapolis, Kassidy DeJong of Unity Christian and Serena Parker of Shenandoah.

Wooldridge and Parker joined Oberman on the Register second-team (Heidi Hillyard of Mediapolis and Kate Walker of Red Oak rounded out the five-person squad), while Ashley Burrows of Bondurant-Farrar, Miranda Chapman of Mount Vernon, Murphy, Miles Ludwigs of Sergeant Bluff-Luton and Parker were on the Sports Spotlight team.

Brainerd finished 10th in class 4A in scoring with 16.1 points per game (and was ninth in free throws made with 91) and finished 35th among players in the class with 149 rebounds. The sophomore blocked 23 shots as well and was one of 28 players in 4A to make at least 50 percent of her field goal attempts.

State champion Harlan had a pair of players - Jess Schaben and Taylor Frederick - on the INA's 4A first-team, which included just two seniors.

Rounding out the first team were Claire Marburger of Perry, Rose Simon-Ressler of Western Dubuque, Jenna Bork of Bishop Heelan, Dani Heritage of Dallas Center-Grimes, Gabie Doud of Ballard and Mariah Criswell of Winterset.

Both Brainerd and Oberman were also the area's lone all-district selections for the Iowa Girls Athletic Coaches Association (IGCA).

Brainerd was one of eight players honored on the 4A All-Northeast team, while Oberman was one of 10 athletes selected to the 3A All-Southeast team.

Finally, Oberman will have another chance to represent her school when she takes part in the IGCA all-star game. Oberman will be part of the 3A/4A/5A Select Gray team, which will take on the 3A/4A/5A Select White squad, Saturday, April 5, at Kirkwood Community College.
