Skeffington Race to celebrate 27th running on June 21

By Ross Eberhart
Sports editor

Nighttime will remain the right time for the upcoming 27th running of the Paul Skeffington Memorial Race, which is slated to take place June 21.

For the second-straight year, the race will take place in the evening with both the two-mile run/walk and five-mile run beginning at 6 p.m.

The new starting time was just one of a number of new features of last year's race, which also included a new starting line and route.

The route has changed again, but members of the Paul Skeffington Race committee believe that this new course will soon be the permanent one.

Competitors will begin at the DeWitt Community Center and will head west down 10th Street.

The two races will then split at 11th Avenue with the two-mile competitors heading south down 11th Avenue, and the five-mile runners continuing onto 11th Street like last year.

The two-mile runners and walkers will be able to enjoy more of DeWitt's residential area as they head south before reaching the turnaround point at 3rd Street and heading back.

The five-mile athletes will continue along 11th Street until reaching Westbrook Park where they will get a close-up of the Paul Skeffington Memorial Trail before heading back along 11th Street to the finish line at the Community Center.

Awards will be given to the overall male and female winners of the two-mile race, along with the top-three finishers in each age group, while the first-, second- and third-place overall finishers per gender in the five-mile race and top-three finishers in each age group will also be awarded.

Water and fruit will be available for a short time after the race, while a half-mile fun run will kick off the festivities at 5:30 p.m.

Registration is currently underway for the event and can be done online at or by mail.

Registration and packet pick-up will be 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Friday, June 20 or on race day 4:00-5:45 at the Community Center.

The race has led to a number of community projects throughout the years, and the committee members are very excited about the latest - the restoration of the north bridge at Westbrook Park - a project they have been saving for for years.

Last year, over 700 runners and walkers enjoyed the first evening running of the Paul Skeffington Memorial Race, and the 27th edition is ready to rule the night again on June 21.
