Central goalkeeper Justin Schwennen makes sure a Dyersville Beckman shot attempt will clear the goal during the Sabers’ game with the Blazers earlier this month. Schwennen recorded a career-high 12 saves in Thursday night’s game with Davenport Assumption, as Central finished its regular season with a 1-0 win.
Central reaches 12 wins again after downing Knights
Nothing shows you are ready for the postseason quite like making a little history.

One year after setting the program mark for wins in a season with 12, the Central boys soccer team reached a dozen victories again, Thursday night, in its regular season finale against Davenport Assumption.

The 10th-ranked Sabers struck first in the contest, getting a goal from sophomore Keegan Lass, and that proved to be all the scoring Central would need in a 1-0 win.

The Saber defense was in top form again, notching its second-straight shutout (Central has allowed just two goals during its current four-game winning streak) and becoming just the third squad this season to blank the Knights.

When Assumption was able to get off a shot, junior goalkeeper Justin Schwennen was ready to gobble it up. The Saber set a personal-best in the game with 12 saves.

The play of everyone in the back of the formation helped make sure that Lass' sixth goal of the season - it was assisted by Jacob Van Laere - held as the game-winner.

It was one of three shots for Lass, who put two of them on goal.

Van Laere led the way for the Sabers with five shots, while sophomore Elliot Arensdorf had two, and Brady Baxter, Nicholas Costello, Bill Dolan and John Stammeyer all had one.

Central will have the opportunity to set a new school record for wins in a season as they open the postseason tomorrow with a game against either Maquoketa or Mount Vernon.
