Warriors' season ends with a ninth-place finish at districts

By Ross Eberhart
Sports editor

The season came to a close one meet too early for the Calamus-Wheatland boys golf team.

Competing with eight other squads for a spot in this week's 1A state golf meet in Marshalltown, the Warriors saw their spring end with a ninth-place round of 394.

A pair of fellow Tri-Rivers conference squads led the way.

East Buchanan put all four of its scoring golfers in the top-20 and brought home the team title with a 333 - six strokes better than Lisbon, who earned the other spot at state.

AGWSR was third with a 345, while Newman Catholic and West Central (Maynard) rounded out the top-five with scores of 355 and 358 respectively.

The Warriors were led by sophomore Austin Rickertsen and senior Brendan Williams, who both broke 100 at the meet.

Rickertsen had a fantastic back nine as he parred three holes and birdied the par-five 17th to card a 41. The sophomore added a par on the eighth hole as well and finished with an 86 overall, good for a tie for 14th.

Williams, meanwhile, produced Cal-Wheat's best score on the front nine, parring three different holes (including back-to-back pars on two and three) en route to a 44. Williams parred the 17th hole as well and finished his round with a 96.

Junior Kirk Hamann notched his own birdie on the par-four seventh hole and shot a 101, while Jacob Schwien finished off the Warriors' team score with a 111 - highlighted by a par on the second hole.
