The DeWitt Police Department is investigating the theft of several golf carts over the weekend from Springbrook Country Club.

The carts known to have been taken — seven of them — have been found, but police are investigating whether other carts also were temporarily taken but returned to their initial location.

While most of the carts were recovered on the club premises, some of them were damaged beyond repair.

It is believed that the carts were stolen from the club and vandalized sometime during the early hours of Sunday morning, Sept. 15.

Springbrook Golf Course Superintendent Ike Hurning said he cannot speculate at this point the dollar amount of damage to the carts.

Hurning has worked for 25 years as superintendent at Springbrook, a private, 18-hole course located in north DeWitt. He said this is the first time he had seen this kind of situation at the club during his tenure.

“We’ve had some (vandalism) in the past, but nothing of this magnitude,” Hurning related. “Hopefully, in the future, if anyone is thinking of doing something like this again, they’ll think twice.”
