Two people informed the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office about a phone scam that occurred this past weekend.
One of the complainants received a phone call from a person claiming to be Deputy Morales, with the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office. Our office does not have an employee named Deputy Morales.
Soon after the complainants were told there was a warrant for their arrest, they realized the call was a scam and hung up. The callers reportedly were using the news of an arrest warrant as a ploy to woo credit card payments from the complainants.
The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office does not conduct business in this manner.
The sheriff’s office does not call people requesting payment over the phone to take care of a warrant.
If anyone did provide any financial information to this scammer, contact your credit card company. Anyone who gave out debit card information should contact his or her financial institution to file a fraud complaint.
