Two Midland Middle School students were found Friday morning after being reported missing the night before.

Midland Superintendent Todd Hawley sent a message to district parents Friday morning saying two students, aged 13 and 14, were reported missing after getting off the bus in Lost Nation. WQAD reported the girls were last seen walking near Rustic Park in Lost Nation.

A press release from the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office said a search for the two girls began that night and lasted throughout the night. Citizens in Lost Nation, the Jones County Sheriff’s Office and Lost Nation Fire Department aided in the search, as did the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations.

The next morning around 10 a.m., the two girls were located unharmed by Illinois State Police in Princeton, Illinois.

Clinton County Sheriff Bill Greenwalt said Monday morning that an investigation into the case was still ongoing, including how the girls were able to travel two hours away. Greenwalt said there was no “foul play or criminal activity associated with the missing children.”
