John Moffit was born Feb. 20, 1932, in Mechanicsville, the son of Maurice and Mary Margaret Fisher Moffit.
He graduated from Mechanicsville High School in 1949.
John served in the Air Force from 1952-1956.
He was a farmer on a family Century Farm in Mechanicsville. John was also a private pilot, and built and restored several planes and some tractors.
He was a member of the American Legion and the Experimental Aircraft Association. He was also a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mechanicsville.
John married Gwenolyn Watson in 1957. They later divorced. He married Carmella “Jean” Jacobsen in 2005. He then moved to the DeWitt area.
He is survived by two sons, Scott and Jay Moffit, of Mechanicsville; a daughter, Jill (Greg) Williams, of Monticello; five grandchildren, Stacey Moffit, Jessica Moffit, Jordan Williams, Alyx Williams and Spencer Williams; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Janell (Dave) Copsin of California.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Charles Moffit and Bill Moffit.
Per his wishes, John has donated his body to the University of Iowa. There will be no funeral. Military services will be held at a later date.
