He is survived by his wife, Carol, having just celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary; a daughter, Kelly (Phil) Bertram of Normal, Illinois, and a son, John (Kim) Borland of Chicago, Illinois. He is also survived by two grandchildren.
Russ was preceded in death by his parents and an older brother James.
Russ graduated from high school in Shenandoah. After serving in the Navy during the Korean War, Russ attended Iowa State University and received his bachelor of science degree from NW Missouri State. He earned a master’s degree in mathematics from Central Michigan University and pursued what would be a 38-year teaching career, commencing in Denver and Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Neola and DeWitt Iowa Community High School; finally retiring from the Des Moines Public Schools. Following his retirement, Russ and Carol moved to The Villages in Florida, later returning to the Midwest to be near family.
Russ enjoyed his family immensely, as well as keeping in touch with friends all over the world. He was also a life-long Iowa Hawkeyes fan.
