Leonard B. Franzen

Leonard B. Franzen, 84, of DeWitt, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, July 7, 2021, in his home.

Leonard was born Jan. 23, 1937, to Mathias and Mary (Dwyer) Franzen near Sugar Creek. He attended a country school in Jackson County, and served two years in the U.S. Army, where he received his GED. He farmed in the Oxford Junction area and worked for Ralston Purina in Clinton. Leonard married Cheryl Turner on Jan. 14, 1977, in Tipton. The couple resided in DeWitt, raising four daughters. He retired from Ralston Purina.

Leonard was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in DeWitt. He enjoyed camping, fishing, playing cards. He enjoyed coffee in the mornings with his friends. Leonard especially enjoyed time with his grandkids, taking them to McDonalds and to the park, and generally spoiling them.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Cheryl; daughters, Jodie Yackle, DeWitt, Joni Husemann, Monmouth, Jamie (Steve) Moyer, DeWitt, Joy (Chris) Husemann, Clinton; grandchildren, Trevor, Haley, Jacob, Hope, Alexis, Emma, Baylie, and Tayler; siblings, Jo Ann Reiter, Anamosa, Martin Franzen, Maquoketa, Patsy (Orville) Wagner, Delmar, Edward “Butch” (Marie) Franzen, DeWitt, Marvin (Barb) Franzen, Maquoketa, Wayne (Julie) Franzen, Maquoketa, and Rita Hughes, Maquoketa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Anna Marie Wagner, Vincent Franzen, Gerald Franzen, Marcelene Eganhouse, Rosalia Franzen and James Franzen.

Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 9, 2021, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 10, 2021, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, the Rev. Fr. Stephen Page officiating. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, DeWitt.
