The catalyst of a Central DeWitt offense that led class 3A with 408 hits, senior shortstop Devin Hurdle gave opposing pitchers fits at the top of the Sabers lineup. Central’s leadoff hitter batted .343 this summer, while finishing second for the Sabers with 47 hits. Hurdle showed his power, too, slugging 14 doubles, three triples and a home run. In addition to his many hits, Hurdle also ranked fifth in Class 3A with 31 walks. Once he was on base — and it was a lot, nearly 49 percent of Hurdle’s at-bats ended with him on base — Hurdle continued to make his presence known, stealing 30 bases and ultimately scoring 55 runs (good for second in 3A). Hurdle scored in each of the Sabers’ three state tournament games.
