MOUNT VERNON — The final scores kept getting closer and closer, but the Central DeWitt volleyball team was unable to extend its WaMaC East match with Mount Vernon Tuesday.
The Sabers traded more and more points with the Mustangs, who are ranked 10th in Class 3A, but the hosts won all three sets in a 25-10, 25-17, 25-20 victory.
The Mount Vernon defense did not make thing easy for the Central attack, limiting the Sabers to 13 kills, thanks in large part to 54 digs and 11 blocks.
Junior Talbot Kinney led the way for the Sabers with four kills, while sophomores Ava Morris and Taylor Veach both put down three.
Veach added five assists to her three kills, while senior Alyssa Eden dished out five assists of her own.
Senior Kaity Frick led the Central defense with six digs while Kinney had five, Morgan Machovec four and Veach three.
Lauren Cooper, Kinney, Morris and Elaina Schroeder, meanwhile, all had blocks.
The Sabers put all but three of their serves in play, highlighted by an 11-for-11 night for Frick, who also served up a team-high two aces (fellow senior Carleigh Jefford also put all 11 of her serves into play).
