DUBUQUE — The outdoor season remains a ways off, but the Central DeWitt boys and girls track teams opened their indoor campaigns Tuesday at the University of Dubuque Early Bird Co-Ed Invitational.
Relay teams led the way for the Sabers. The girls had two quartets finish in the top five to help them finish 11th with 13 points, while the boys scored half of their six team points — good for 13th overall — in two relays.
The Central DeWitt girls 4x800 team provided the best finish with seniors Crystal Burke, Carly Small and Hannah Payne joining sophomore Mason Lange to take fourth overall with a clocking of 10:30.32.
Burke, Small and Lange teamed up again in the 4x400 with Savanah Meyne joining the trio to help the Sabers take fifth in 4:25.26.
Junior Colleen Klostermann added a sixth-place time of 7.79 in the 55-meter dash, while fellow junior Morgan Machovec wrapped up the Sabers’ scoring with a leap of 15-5 — good for eighth — in the long jump.
Senior Maggie Borota added her own top 10 finish in the field events, finishing right at 10th with a throw of 32-1 in the shot put.
The Sabers’ 4x200 team, meanwhile, picked up their own 10th with the quartet of Klostermann, Machovec, Ava Morris and Meyne clocking in at 1:57.21.
The girls produced a champion in the junior varsity portion of the meet as freshman Soren Maricle was the only athlete to clear 5-0 in the high jump.
Emma Kizer added a seventh-place effort of 27-2 in the junior varsity shot put, while a pair of JV relays both finished 10th.
The 4x200 team of Lynden Zevenbergen, Maricle, Megan Lindsly and Keeley Jansen earned one of the 10ths with their time of 2:07.66, while the 4x800 quartet of Kyleen Irwin, Alina Manvelova, Hannah Sunday and Kate Kuehl was also 10th in 12:47.43.
The Central DeWitt boys’ top finish came from junior Cole Miller, who uncorked a throw of 43-6 to take sixth in the shot put.
The Sabers’ 4x400 team of Garrett Sailor, Caden Ridgley, Hunter Blankenship and Tyler Herington added a seventh-place performance of 3:47.68.
A second relay — the 4x800 team of Tanner Naeve, Blankenship, Carter Donovan and Wyatt Sailer — meanwhile, took eighth overall with their time of 9:23.55.
The Sabers’ junior varsity 4x800 team also finished eighth with the team of Blake Gerard, Corey McAleer, Shawn Hoffman and Hayden Kruse clocking in at 10:36.44.
Central DeWitt picked up a top-10 finish in the junior varsity shot put as well with freshman Sam Gravert taking 10th with his throw of 33-7.
