GOOSE LAKE — Wrestling on their home mat for a final time, Northeast seniors Ty Schmidt, Cody Ploog and Peyton McLane led the way for the Rebels during a River Valley Conference double dual Thursday.
The veteran trio went a combined 5-0 during Northeast’s duals with Iowa City Regina and Durant, while earning bonus points in three of the matches.
All three grapplers brought home victories in the Rebels’ 27-16 setback to the Regals.
Schmidt had the most dramatic victory, erasing an 8-5 deficit with an escape and then a late takedown before picking up the winning takedown in overtime for a 10-8 decision over Aidan Udell (it was just Udell’s third setback).
Right after the 170-pounder’s victory, Ploog racked up four different takedowns in an 11-3 major decision over Danny Gavin at 182 pounds.
Points were harder to come by in McLane’s match at 285 pounds, but after a scoreless first period and riding out Regina’s Caden Shetler in the second period, the Rebel jumped in front with an escape and later added a match-clinching takedown in a 3-0 decision.
Northeast’s other victory against the Regals came from junior Jace Rathje, who pinned Carter Rios in 2:42.
Rathje added a second fall to kick off the Rebels’ dual with Durant, pinning Ellie Fuller-Long in exactly a minute.
It was the first of three falls in the dual for Northeast.
Schmidt earned the second, flattening Brady Meincke in 2:34, while McLane ended his match with Dakota Adams in the first period, picking up a fall in 1:47.
